Adaptations of Cinderella
Charles Perrault is the first known story tell to have recorded the story of Cinderella in 1697. Perrault’s version is much the same as the version we know today. In fact Disney based his versions solely on Perrault’s version rather than the Grimm Brother’s as it had a ‘happily ever after’.
Since then there is believed to be a thousand versions of Cinderella, each with a unique telling which carries cultural information about the time and place the story was told (Teacher.scholastic.com, 1997). Cinderella has continued to adapt into picture books, novels, movies and even poems. Although authors, writers and filmmakers continue to recycle Perrault’s famous fairy tale, they all continue to follow the same story line and common theme of overcoming hardship to achieve success.
